Indonesia Net Zero Summit 2022:
Industrial Decarbonization at All Cost

A B20 Sideline Event

Bali, November 11, 2022

Industrial decarbonization is a pathway that business and industries must opt for in order to significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Yet the benefit and value of this pathway come with its own cost and challenge.  Just like businesses today, carbon emission knows no boundaries. Thus, a global-level engagement and cooperation are just mandatory in this age of globalization.

Commit to Net Zero

More and more companies are shifting towards net zero as business leaders are acknowledging that climate-related catastrophes, from extreme weather to destructive disasters, are threats that can directly impact many sides of business

Environmental disasters, such as heavy rain and flooding, can pose damaging results to business facilities and workforce.

Business resources, like certain agricultural products and energy, are at risk due to low resilience in extreme weather.

Unpredictable environmental changes resulting in regulatory and political shifts causes businesses to face compliance challenges.

Net Zero (business) is reducing greenhouse gas emission and/or ensuring that the produced emissions are balanced by removals (of the produced greenhouse gas). The growing popularity of this term among companies in the last couple of years has shown the growing awareness of the very important value of Net Zero. Companies have now realized that without active participation, the world might break the 1.5 degree Celsius ceiling. And when that ceiling is broken, there would be expensive consequences to be paid by the companies themselves.

That’s why global companies are actively taking part in the global movement of less Carbon business. More than ever, the private sector holds a key role in leading the world towards Net Zero.

As Indonesia advances further into the movement, the private sector shall no longer take a backseat in the dynamics of climate actions and instead step up to take real, measurable, and committed actions. Such participation not only would help national companies to sustain, but also to help Indonesia to achieve its global commitment to reduce the greenhouse gas emission.

Learn More about Net Zero

Global leaders are reshaping the business ecosystem to adapt better to not only environmental changes, but also to consumer behavior changes that increase demands for climate-responsible products. Regulators, investors, and the market have adopted business regulations that prioritize the environment, such as importers implementing a green certificate requirement for exporters, investors obligating renewable energy usage in targeted investment locations, and investment entities cutting funds to industries producing high CO2 emission.

Learn the Steps Your Company Will Take

Sooner more than later, Indonesia will become part of the global net zero business ecosystem. Joining the movement now and being a step ahead will be beneficial for private companies, as participation of the Indonesia’s private sector, in particular, is still at its earlier stage. This is in part due to a gap between issue awareness and taking action.

As part of the Indonesian private sector, your company’s journey to net zero commitment will be assisted by Net Zero Hub, an initiative by KADIN that aims to put Indonesian businesses on the global net zero map.

At the base, KADIN Net Zero Hub encourages Indonesian private sector to take up the mantle and commit to their net zero pledge: “To Become a Net Zero Company by 2060 at the Latest”

KADIN Net Zero Hub adopts the principles and pathways set by Science Based Targets initiatives (SBTi), co-founded by World Resources Institute (WRI) who acts as Knowledge Partner, as its guiding principles to ensure that all action plans are aligned to climate science.

As part of transparency and responsibility, KADIN Net Zero Hub encourages discipline disclosures for companies related to their climate actions, both on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and Impact Assessment.

ESG and Impact Assessment are also parts of a company’s fiduciary duties to shareholders, markets, and business partners to show that Indonesian companies are aiming for long-term and sustainable climate actions.

A net-zero enabling ecosystem is important to establish to achieve net zero collectively. Building an ecosystem that supports and eases every company in their negative carbon journey is what KADIN Net Zero Hub strives to achieve.

This enabling business ecosystem shall be inclusive, facilitating both large corporates and upcoming startups, business entities and research-focused academia. Every actor matters in building a net zero ecosystem.
